Russian-born, Brooklyn-based.
My current work takes its shape in a variety of media and repurposed materials - drawings, fiber, photography, found objects, my family’s archive, soil, bedsheets, and more. I recontextualize cultural imagery and iconography from my Russian roots to highlight the dissonance between the intended meaning and acquired political messaging. In my current practice, I am investigating the state's capacity for inciting conflict and estrangement in domestic spaces through censorship and propaganda.
Much of my photo work deals with themes of functionality, perception, and objectivity. It features natural and urban landscapes that have a specific purpose to serve humans, and photographed out of their general context. Objectively portrayed, familiar places become foreign and distant. Without human presence, the original function either disappears or ceases to be significant. Challenging the viewer's perspective, the work calls for contemplation of how function stands in the way of seeing.
